Here is an example of a helpful comment that provides a couple of ideas for improving the article.
The introduction to sniffing is really well written and provides a detailed explanation of the behavior in a way accessible to even a non-science-related reader, this is good. In the final sentence, you mention “atypical sniffing” in neuro disorders and I would say that since the rest of the paragraph is so clearly stated, it would be nice to include a brief explanation of what “atypical sniffing” is—in terms of atypical rhythm/frequency/etc? In essence, what would help define “atypical sniffing” to a lay person. This background and history that you have provided is very thorough.
Perhaps something that would be interesting to look into would be evolution of the nose/snout to maximize sniffing potential. I wonder if the shape of snouts on animals that use a high frequency of sniffing and focus on this particular sense to live has changed over time to better utilize the sniffing behavior. Also, there might have been some animal species which were not able to sniff as well and therefore were not able to survive due because of use defensively (sniff your predator) or offensively for food (sniff safe plants/prey vs deadly ones). I would be curious to see the impact of sniffing in the evolution of animals since it has such an important role in survival.
