Example Comments

Here is an example of a helpful comment.

  • Will there be challenges with the inflammation response due to implanting the electrode? If so, how would this be approached or maybe it's not necessary to take it into account?
  • The biocompatibility of the wires is mentioned in the Innovation benchmark. It may be useful to also mention biocompatibility here too.
  • Will the force values used for the stepper motor be determined before the animal study (with nerve samples) or decided through trial and error during the experiment?
  • For the histology, fixing the tissue in formalin may not necessarily keep the wires from damaging the tissue when they are removed after fixation. Has it been shown that removing the wires will not cause additional damage if removed from the nerves after fixation? Why is it not possible to perform histology with the wire inserted? It might be beneficial to keep the wire inserted.
  • In the expected outcomes for Aim 2, it’s mentioned ‘threading the electrodes.’ This is the first time threading was mentioned for the interfascicular electrodes. In the implantation methods, it sounded like the electrodes would be inserted into the nerve with force; threading sound more graceful. Is there a difference?
  • When doing chronic studies (Aim 3), nerve anatomy for canines may differ from the rabbit sciatic nerve anatomy. So, something to keep in mind when fabricating and designing the geometry of the FINEs.
  • In the expected outcomes for Aim 3, what if the EMG recordings do not correlate with the neural recordings for some reason?

Overall, your grant is coming along well. Things are explained in good detail and tells a good story for your experimental plan. Good job!
